This
section will focus on part cleaning and rust proofing. Each
part that was removed from the Bronco, and that is exposed to
the elements would have to be cleaned and protected from rust
before being placed back on the Bronco. The method I decided
to use was sandblasting to clean the parts, and Por-15 paint
to protect them. I purchased the desktop sandblast cabinet from
The Eastwood Company. The cabinet is large enough to fit a 15"
wheel inside, so I could do 98% of the Bronco's parts right
in my garage, saving me a lot of money.
I
read a lot of information about a product called Por-15. It
is a paint that when applied to metal will completely seal it
and prevent rust from forming. I tried it out and decided to
use it on everything. It is tough as nails and looks really
good as well, a nice glossy black. I was telling a friend how
durable it was, and he did not believe me. He asked me to prove
it, so I grabbed a hammer and started whacking on my transmission
case, after 7 or 8 blows it showed no signs of damage. Needless
to say, he was convinced at that point.
I
have documented the process for you to see, in this case it
is on the clutch linkage brackets and hardware.
